  16. <p>Two disparate radicals battle what they see as an oppressive
  17. society

  19. <p>     Urban, leftist, academic Berkeley, California, and remote
  20. northern Idaho don't share a lot. But both places have become
  21. havens for Americans who have dropped out of the workaday
  22. culture, who have a paranoid streak, and who view the very
  23. concept of government as oppressive.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>-- In Berkeley police said Rosebud Abigail Denovo, 19,
  26. broke into the mansion of University of California chancellor
  27. Chang-Lin Tien intending to kill him. Part of a self-styled
  28. "People's Will Direct Action Committee," Denovo took part in
  29. protests over plans by the university and the city of Berkeley
  30. to build volleyball courts at People's Park, long a refuge of
  31. the homeless. She had a history of psychiatric treatment and was
  32. arrested last year for stashing explosives at a bivouac in the
  33. Berkeley hills.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     Denovo was shot dead by an officer who said she lunged at
  36. him with a machete when she was cornered in the chancellor's
  37. residence. A note found inside her duffel bag bore the message,
  38. "We are willing to die for this land. Are you?"
  39. </p>
  40. <p>-- In Idaho white separatist Randy Weaver seemed willing
  41. to die for his piece of land too, as he holed up in his cabin
  42. near the hamlet of Naples, surrounded by FBI agents, federal
  43. marshals and local police officers. Authorities put his
  44. mountaintop redoubt under surveillance after he failed to appear
  45. for a February 1991 trial on charges of selling two sawed-off
  46. shotguns to an undercover agent. Two weeks ago, Weaver's
  47. 13-year-old son Samuel and federal marshal William Degan were
  48. killed in a gun battle as lawmen approached the cabin.
  49. Prosecutors charged Weaver's comrade Kevin Harris, 24, with
  50. murdering Degan. Weaver's wife Vicki was killed in a second
  51. gunfight.
  52. </p>
  53. <p>     Weaver, 44, has ties to the racist Aryan Nations sect
  54. based in Hayden Lake, 60 miles to the south. Some neighbors,
  55. saying Weaver simply wants the government to leave him alone,
  56. brought food and mail to the cabin after Weaver retreated there
  57. last year. After the shoot-out, as officers cordoned off the
  58. mountain, local sympathizers shouted obscenities at police
  59. manning the roadblock and vowed, "We'll get you!" At week's end
  60. Weaver, his remaining three children and Harris continued to
  61. hunker down as lawmen used loudspeakers to broadcast appeals
  62. from family members and friends urging the outlaw to surrender.
